Jan Meeting

Sorry for a bit of a delay in posting this. Will explain later. Rachel Nettles came to entertain us with a talk called intriguingly "Cabbages and Nettles".It soon became apparent. Racel brought along a wide range of vegetables that she had created , using a dissolvable fabric, lots of thread and loads of patience. These pieces were all life sized and took several looks to realise that they were not real. Rachel brought along sewing machines so that we could have a try too.She explained how she marketed her work, all over the worls , but directed towards the horticultural rather than craft market.Check her out at cabbagesandnettles.com

Embroiderers’ Guild – Bolton Branch      January 2018

Happy New Year and welcome to the first meeting of 2018.

This Saturday we have our Jacob’s Feast at Bank Top Church, Ashworth Lane starting at 10 am. We will be playing with Paisley shapes so please bring a selection of threads and embellishments -beads, sequins, buttons, etc and a sewing kit.

Our Regional Day this year is 21st April at the Wellington Park Hotel, Leyland.  The tickets are £26 including lunch.  If you wish to attend, please give your names to Sheelagh.  There are two competitions of interest at regional day:   the Rose Bowl competition on the theme of “Our Beautiful North West”, and the Aurofil Award for “Excellence in Embroidery”.  Members may enter one piece of work into either or both competitions.  The work must be entirely your own and completed in the last two years.  There are no size restrictions.  More details of the conditions and judging criteria are on the notice board.   Both competitions will be judged at the regional day.

Our branch has done well in regional competitions in the last few years so hopefully we will have some good entries this year.

The national Members’ challenge for 2017/18 is “Underfoot” and the closing date for entries is 28 February 2018.  Details are on the noticeboard and they are also on the   EG website, but you need to log into the members’ section.

100 Hearts
As part of the EG’s plan to bring stitch and textile art to a wider public, they are inviting members to take part in a commemoration of the ending of WW1 100 years ago by embroidering a heart inspired by the “sweethearts” made by wounded WW1 soldiers while recuperating from their injuries.  You should have received all the details of this project by e-mail in December.  Full details are also on the noticeboard and on the EG website – log into the members’ section.  If you wish to take part you must complete a registration form and post it so the project team receive it by 5 February 2018.  Hearts to be completed by 31 July.

Details of the regional Summer School, 1-3 June, are on the notice board.  The two tutors are Julia Triston who came to our regional day at Haigh Hall and Valerie Wartelle who came to our June 17  meeting.

Textile 21 group are exhibiting new work at Ordsall Hall until 4 Feb 2018, in an exhibition titled “Shaped by Time”.  This is their  response to stories of people who have lived at Ordsall and made it their home and to the changes in the building over time.
