Our speaker was Mary Taylor, a textile artist who lives in the Lake
District and works from a studio in Farfield Mill in Sedburgh. She
specialises in embroidered landscapes of the beautiful scenery around her home
and studio. Scotland, especially the west coast around Ardnamurchan
is also a source of inspiration for her.
She gave a fascinating slide
presentation showing how she constructs her landscapes in stitch. Working
from a photo, she sketches her design onto Vilene. Next she layers strips
of velvet in many subtle colours onto the Vilene to suggest land, sea, sky, etc
followed by a layer of organza strips, again in many shades, all pinned to the
base. Dense machine embroidery is then applied to create the
fields, trees, rocks and other features of the land or seascape. Heat is
also applied to reveal some of the velvet layer. She brought with her examples
of the finished landscapes, alive with colour and texture.

Exhibitions and Events
The NW regional day this year is in Lancaster on Saturday, April
22nd at the University of
Cumbria, Lancaster Campus, Bowerham Rd,
Lancaster LA1 3JD. Tickets are £25 each to include lunch. If you are interested in going, please give

Bowl competition at Regional
Day is on the theme of Entrances - Doorways, gateways, windows, etc.
The
National AGM 2017 is in Edinburgh on
1 April. Details and the programme are

EG
members from Manchester and Cheshire will be displaying work at Tatton Park 25 March – 30 July,
inspired by the landscapes and gardens of Tatton, as part of the Capability
Brown Festival. Further details: www.events.tattonpark.org.uk.
There is also a CB festival display at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, 1
February – 10 May.
An
exhibition of New Quilting supported by Arts Council England will be held at
the Rheged Centre, Penrith 3 March – 23 April.
Ruby
Porter has organized a sale and exhibition of textiles from Sreepur village in
Bangladesh at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral 17 – 26 February, 11am – 4pm. Ruby will talk about her work with the
Sreepur community each day.

The EG nationally has
set up an appeal inviting members, branches, regions and the wider stitch
community to contribute to the fee for the services looking after the
Collection being provided by Bucks County Museum in Aylesbury. For the first two years, the appeal is for
£45,000. We have details of how to
contribute if you so wish.
