March meeting

It was quite a change on Tuesday.Shelley Rhodes had been invited along and her talk was”Travels with a sketch book”.This appealed to me on several levels. Number one was the idea of holiday photos, I never know how to use them. Shelley explained that she was a mixed media artist  who managed to sketch every day. She prepared her books with a variety of ways and then played with pains and inks.004005Her talk was illustrated with a slide presentation and of course , many of her books were also displayed. She then briefly explained how these pages can be moved forward into a finished work.

Out and about,Ordsall Hall

What a busy weekend.I have just returned from an invitation to the Ten Plus exhibition at Ordsall hall. The Hall is a little gem and was extremely busy when we arrived, lots of youngsters learning about Tudor life, which i found delightful.

Diana Shone had sent the invitation ,and as I love her work, I was delighted to attend.004Apologies for the light in this one. This one is better.

007

We also chatted to Barbara Jepson who visited us last year. One of her colourful spring pieces is below.

002In fact at times it was hard to see the embroideries as we spoke to so many friends and acquaintances. I would recommend a trip. Its not far and on until 9thJune.

Ordsall Hall. Salford,M5 3AN. I suggest you phone first as there opening days can vary.0161 778 0800

March workshop

It was good to welcome Jackie Cardy to a workshop again. It seems ages since she was last with us. Sadly 4 members were ill and unable to attend. However the rest of us had a splendid day. Jackie had suggested that we make a piece of felt and also colour brown paper in readiness for the day.She had also given an indication of inspirational materials.

002

I went along with two possible ideas and had decided that I would work in the pink/purple range. I have given up using colours that I don't like.

We put our design onto a thin tear able background and then stitched it onto our felt.Several outlined edges later we began to put in details and embellishment.

007

Lesley had managed to send soup and rolls , even though she was in Canada plus puddings by Clare and Judith and we were ready to start again.014015016

I glanced at my watch and it was after 3.30 so we had to begin tidying up.We had the usual show and tell . I was amazed , firstly about the amount of work managed by some of our members and as always, the range of work produced from the same basic idea.

I'm sure everyone really enjoyed the day and I feel convinced that we will see the finished pieces very soon. Thank you Jackie.

Reminder that there will be a play day on Sat 25th May at Bank Top. Heat treatments etc. Bring along your bits and inspirations and we will swap!!! FREE

URGENT change

Apologies for publishing a change of date for our Jacobs Feast.Sadly that date has been taken so we are still negotiating for another date. Will keep you updated.

Out and About, Burnley

Last Tuesday I was invited along to the preview of  the Progressive Threads exhibition at Queen Street Mill Textile Museum[BB10 2HX] The show was titled ” In touch with Textiles ”.  There was a diverse range of techniques and some really lovely pieces that reflect the traditional and contemporary use of textiles. Several of the members are also members of our Guild so it was splendid to see their work so well displayed. I took a few photos but the show is on until29th June so I suggest you go along and see for yourself.

Out and About,Padiham,March meeting

A week ago{sorry its so long again} I went to the meeting in Padiham. One of our members Diane Derbyshire is a volunteer at Gawthorpe .She has a fascination with lace and has been working closely with the Rachel Kaye Shuttlewoth collection. With this in mind, she was able to give us a history of needlelace, illustrated with pieces from her personal collection and several pieces borrowed from “the Collection”. Diane then brought the talk right up to date, showing us pieces that she has worked. Very interesting. I took some photos but obviously there are none from the Collection.

Diane{above} shows us a small gift worked for her by a lady in Australia. The raffle was drawn and I was lucky enough to win the first prize, a wonderful collection of yellow fabrics and threads. My immediate reaction was that I could use them in my “Summer” piece that I must do for our competition, later this year.
